BIOGRAPHY

Luke Norvell is currently a fourth-year resident artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts, where he studies under the esteemed Bill Schuman. A gifted tenor, Mr. Norvell has been recognized for his "dramatic intensity and evenness of line, along with a big-house sense of amplitude" (Parterre Box). This season, Norvell performs the title role of Faust at AVA, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with Opera Roanoke, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte in Philadelphia, and Mozart’s Requiem at the Irvine Memorial Chapel.  This summer, he will join the prestigious Internationale Meistersinger Akademie in Germany.


While at AVA, he performed Alfredo in La Traviata, Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, Lensky in Eugene Onegin, and Duca in Rigoletto (Act 3).  He also performed the title role in Werther (Act 3) with Opera Philadelphia, as well as joined Utah Festival Opera as Rinuccio in a double bill of Gianni Schicchi and Buoso's Ghost, and as the tenor soloist in Verdi’s Messa di Requiem. Previous engagements also include Rodolfo in La Bohème and Lensky in Eugene Onegin with Music Academy of the West, Anatol in Vanessa with Spoleto Festival USA, and Fenton in Falstaff with Puget Sound Concert Opera.

Additional repertoire includes the title role in Les contes d’Hoffmann and Roméo et Juliette, the Italian Tenor in Der Rosenkavalier, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Macduff in Macbeth, and the Prince in Rusalka.


Moreover, Norvell has earned recognition in numerous prestigious competitions. He has been awarded prizes in the Tenor Viñas Competition (5th place), Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (District Winner), Houston Grand Opera (Finalist), Opera Index (Emerging Artist), Giargiari Bel Canto Competition (2nd place and Audience Choice), Young Patronesses of the Florida Grand Opera Competition (1st place and Audience Choice), Michael Ballam Competition (1st place and Audience Favorite), and SAS Performing Arts Competition (1st place). He also reached the final rounds of the Vincerò World Singing Competition and the Eleanor McCollum Concert of Arias.
