ELIZABETH ASKREN

CONDUCTOR

BIOGRAPHY

Elizabeth Askren has built a fast-rising career by empowering musicians around the world, whether from the podium as a conductor of leading ensembles, as an educator with her Transylvanian Opera Academy, and as a speaker on issues of leadership, diversity and more. As the Faclia newspaper described it: "her assurance, genuineness, and precise gestures captured the attention of all those present, and made for an unforgettable evening."

Recent performances include débuts in Europe with the Transylvanian State Philharmonic, the Romanian National Opera of Cluj-Napoca, and France’s Victor Hugo Franche-Comté orchestra, and in the United States with the Dallas Opera and Kentucky Opera. She has also performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on recent recording projects. Last season featured her début at The Dallas Opera for Così fan tutte and at Opéra Dijon for The Turn of the Screw, as well as The Secret Garden with Hawaii Opera Theatre and La scala di seta with the Academie de Opéra National de Paris. This season, she leads Le nozze di Figaro with both New Orleans Opera and Portland Opera and returns to Hawaii Opera Theatre for their production of Pagliacci.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

"... precision to the millimeter, the agility, the dynamics…” – ForumOpera.com

The Turn of the Screw – “The precision to the millimeter, the agility, the dynamics, the colors are there and contribute to the emotion of the listeners: infinite details are perceptible, which we discover with delight. The baton of Elizabeth Askren, discovered on this occasion, is as attentive to the stage as to the pit, and demonstrates a constant exigency. Britten's rich orchestration, his colorist art, and his dramatic sense are magnified.”

"... a revelatory reading of Britten’s multi-faceted, difficult to categorize score..." – Opera Today

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – “Elizabeth Askren conducted a revelatory reading of Britten’s multi-faceted, difficult to categorize score. From the first haunting string glissandi, Maestra Askren elicited a haunting effect that soon morphed from the ‘spiritual’ fairy realm to the ‘spirited’ human scape and beyond, to the Music Hall sensibilities of the Mechanicals. Britten was a master orchestrator, and Askren inspired virtuosic achievements from the pit, from seamless ensemble playing to exposed, characterful solos, all beautifully rendered.”
